Letter WritingConnecting with your sponsored childYour sponsored child has likely never received a letter in their life! In fact, their parents probably have not either. Even simple things like a bookmark, greeting card and photo are gifts your sponsored child will treasure.
When you write your sponsored child remember:Keep it simple! Write about things they can relate to: news of your family, about your job, the weather, your church and encouragements from Scripture. Ask questions and write a special note or Bible verse in your child's language by going online. Be sensitive about their customs. While in Canada many of us integrate pets into our home, in countries where poverty dominates, many children go hungry. So when talking about pets, consider their situation. Use images to share about your life: In addition to sending your child a letter we encourage you to send photographs, postcards and stickers so they can see who you are and learn about your life. Be cautious in your letters: Your sponsored child often faces challenges of poverty, disease and civil unrest. As you share about your life be sure to exclude any negative messaging. Try not to talk about material possessions, money or luxury. Please do not include a return address.
Sending Your LetterMail delivery to your sponsored child's community is very rare. Many times the community will be responsible for parcels and retrieving them may be costly. In order to ensure delivery of mail please send all letters to International Needs at: 5230 South Service Rd., Before sending your letter to the field, our office will review it to ensure the contents are in accordance with our policies and those of our partnering countries. Please note that postal services and international regulations may cause time delays for the delivery of letters.
Sending Special GiftsWe encourage you to tuck postcards, stickers and cards in your letters to your sponsored child. But please do not send parcels. Each Christmas and Easter we will give you an opportunity to send a special gift to your sponsored child through a special donation. The social workers, pastors and leaders in your sponsored child's community will select a gift that will help your sponsored child the most. Sending parcels is costly. And many times the parcels are confiscated by custom officers. For the greatest impact in your sponsored child's life, we encourage you to send a special monetary gift so their caregivers can choose a special gift for them. |
