Jessore Vocational Training Centre Program
Jessore is a district in the southwestern tip of Bangladesh where more than half the population live below the poverty line. Cyclones, tidal surges, floods, unemployment, and a low literacy rate are just a few of the challenges facing this region. Skills development is key to improving rural productivity, employability, and income earning opportunities.
International Needs’ Jessore Sewing and Handicrafts Training Project is a 4 year program that reaches out to school dropouts, rural women, and widows. The 3 month courses offered at the Jessore Vocational Training Centre are designed to teach income generating trades and provide the necessary tools and equipment for a successful transition into the workforce.
The Jessore Vocational Training Centre began in 1998 and has successfully trained nearly 1000 women from poor rural and urban areas of Bangladesh. Many are now working with various organizations and others have started their own businesses.
The total cost of the project for the next 4 years: $80,000 CAD

From Florence Elora Martin
“I came to the Jessore Vocational Training Centre to become a seamstress. When I completed my course, I applied for a job at the Sewing Centre for the Office of the District Commissioner in Jessore, and got the job! I still work there and really enjoy my work. I was promoted to Office Assistant and have been honored as a young entrepreneur for which I received a prize and a certificate. I am so grateful to International Needs and the Jessore Vocational Training Centre for teaching me the skills I needed to obtain this great opportunity. Please pray for me that I will continue to perform my duties and responsibilities with excellence.”
